I just read the first three issues of Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children and really really liked it. Although it’s just short stories, not really comics. But I’m going to have to start hunting for the rest of the run.
Also last night I read the first issue of Milligan and Fegredo’s Girl and absolutely LOVED it. I can’t wait to read the other two issues later today.
Holy cannoli, I just read two books that I want to get on the rooftops and profess out loud how much I LOVED THEM.
The Kents - this is basically DC’s Forrest Gump with some of Clark Kents’ family tree set around the civil war. It’s kind of a long read since it’s all set as excerpts from diaries and letter so there’s a lot of prosaic captions. But the book is a true American Epic that runs through many critical events leading up to, through, and following the civil war. Some of the story is obviously fictional, but it’s a real fun historical read. Super strong recommendation but with the caveat to not go in expecting a superhero book or more than a tenuous Superman presence, it’s more of a western historical book.
Midnighter: Out - I believe briandomingos used to praise this book and holy hell he wasn’t wrong. The story was badass, and the art is fantastic! ACO is a total beast and I’m going to start picking up his books in singles, he likes double page spreads and they just don’t look that imposing in collected editions or in an iPad. And it’s also super refreshing to have a character that is sexually active, it’s a key and interesting facet of real life that is rarely represented in superhero comics even though everyone is young and super attractive. All I’m saying is if people in peak physical condition are famously getting it on in the Olympic village during the olympics, why would fictional superheroes in the same peak physical shape not be doing the same?

THE KENTS is a fun book. I miss that kind of DC book. MIDNIGHTER is fabulous! The second volume has a great twist I didn't see coming and the MIDNIGHTER/APOLLO mini continues the themes and is a lot of fun, too.
