Dynamite has announced that Matt Wagner will beheading a new Spirit series bringing Will Eisner's beloved character back yet again. Joe and I talk about it a bit this week on the show, but honestly, neither of us really care about any of the Spirit stories post Eisner. Even with one of my favorite creators at the helm. Are we wrong? Did any of you love any of the Spirit's many relaunches? I'm including Frank Miller's terrible film too. Let's here some Spirit defense!

Sometimes I wonder what Nick Barrucci has on Matt Wagner. It can't be the money. Does he have photos or something? Wagner writes every tired book over at Dynamite. I love Wagner but everything from him at D.E. is mediocre at best. I'd love to see a SPIRIT book from him that is a half as good as TRINITY or something.
I have some mild interest in THE SPIRIT. I was excited about Darwyn Cooke's run when it was announced but it wasn't great. (In fact, the Loeb/Cooke BATMAN/SPIRIT book is one of the worst things I've read by people that know better.)
I did follow the "First Wave" run, though. It was written first by Mark Schultz and then David Hine with art by the brilliant Moritat. They only put out one tpb, which is disappointing. The stories were kind of edgy and Moritat's art is detailed like crazy.

I got lured in by Schultz and Moritat. At some point in the run various creative teams took over and there was a rather impressive bunch of creators dabbling in the book. I collected the whole run, mainly because when I decided to drop the book it got cancelled so I rode it out to the end.
