Last night, I sat down before bed and read the entire Batman: Zero Year.
Batman Issues 21-33 plus Batman Annual #2 and The Riddler Villains month tie-in.
I have to say, overall, the stories were fine. The ART was amazing. Greg Capullo may be my definitive Batman artist.
I want to say as highlights go, the first arc Secret City was by far the best. I loved the intro to Bruce Wayne and it felt like a good early Batman adventure.
The second arc was a little meh overall at further defining the character, but it was full of some the creepy horror into Batman that I would expect and enjoy from Snyder. The art seriously freaked me out with the bone monster.
The last arc actually was very forgettable. Maybe the whole Gotham is an island thing just seems a little overdone. The one thing I loved most though was the final scene with The Riddler. Honestly, the tension was so high, I could have read a whole issue or even two of Batman and Riddler going back and forth with riddles.
Overall, hoping the new arc gives me a little more surprises.
I go back and think of the original run Snyder had on Detective with Jock and hold every other batman story to that level, but nothing has surpassed it. Yet...
As an origin story, no thanks. It's too large in scope. I prefer a smaller story, akin to Miller's Year One story. Bruce Wayne vs. the mob and corruption. I don't care for Batman going straight to saving the city from massive destruction.
That being said, Snyder hits some great story beats throughout Zero Year in regards to the origin. His Alfred is solid, and the last issue was a tearjerker.
