Spent some time this weekend and watched some top CM Punk matches because they were either against Cena or during PPV where Cena had some classic matches...
Got me to thinking... I am sure matches like CM Punk vs AJ Styles would tear the roof off the building, but would any feud make any sort of sense in the current WWE? I'd love to see him return but with such a public outcry against the company, have a hard time seeing it working him back into the fold. I feel like coming back would really feel like a paycheck more than anything.

This is a good question. I find it particularly difficult because I have to come to terms with the fact that pre & post UFC Punk are not the same. Being "Best in the World" means something until you step into another ring and get treated (rightly) like an amateur. Just yesterday I was thinking about what another Samoa Joe v. CM Punk match would look like and...somehow it felt like a step down for Joe? CM Punk was great in the ring and better on the mic. But I don't think he can plug into the current mix with the baggage he's got. I think he would need an opponent that ISN'T in the mix. He needs something that would feel real enough so people didn't think of it as another payday. I think he needs a matchup so big that the idea of it would eclipse his UFC stint: CM Punk v. HHH. If CM Punk came back for a Mania bout with HHH, we wouldn't be thinking about a UFC record. If Punk won, I think he'd be pretty golden on that roster & be reserved as a PPV-only guy. We could get our dream match bookings with AJ. If he lost, that's when I'd book the climb back up the ladder, trying to prove whether he's still got it. If that's the case, have him put on too-close matches with the new guys (great matches, but close enough to ask "Does he still got it?"), then take on the long-timers that he's beaten before (Mark Henry, Big Show, Kane, Jericho- they would, of course, mock him for taking on small timers), then the newer batch (Ziggler, Miz, Orton- these can be back-and-forth), and then...well, whatever they want.
Quite frankly, I do not have a way for him to return to make sense.
My first thought, is story line be damned and just put him vs AJ Styles and let them give a clinic in the ring. Similar to Shinsuke vs Zayn, where there was no story, and just an incredibly well thought out match with twists, turns, and everything a wrestling fan could possibly want.
However, Punk being a master on the mic, it seems foolish not to have him where he is at his best. Perhaps putting him with another master on the mic, they could sell the shiz out of a story line. Like Broc looses to someone down the line and Punk asks Heyman when is he going to cut his weight and actually back someone with integrity or some such ploy and have them go back and forth. Be tough considering Punk was a Heyman guy, but just thinking out loud.
Or... Just have Punk come out and beat Roman Reigns in a near squash match and I think he might be immediately back on top.
