I am just glad to have a Whedon show back on the air. Say what you will, but the man has a talent for taking a concept that just wouldn't work on the small screen (Buffy) and making it pretty darn cool. Have faith, non believers - it'll find its feet and become super super awesome quickly.... I hope.
It's not even Whedon though, not really. Not Joss anyway. Sounds like he's pretty much handed the whole thing over to Jed.

I turned off the second episode after 20 minutes. This is some sub-Stargate SG-1 shiz. It doesn't have a drop of the cinematic quality that we've seen in the Marvel films. Folks, In the last few years we've seen television that has rivaled the best that film has to offer. I'm not expecting ABC to produce a comic book show that's as good as Mad Men or anything, but for eff's sake at least make it as good as Lost. Jesus, even the writing in comic books is more sophisticated than this.
I'm in, because Marvel bought my self respect in 1993, but having just listened to the podcast, Matt Baum is 100% right. All his complaints are right on the nose, and there's far too many people being generous to it. It's horrible so far, absolutely horrible.
Though I think he's missing the point on Fitz and Simmons. As their name suggests, they're pretty much intended to *be* one character, just split into two. They're the 'two headed science exposition guy'. The only reason there's two of them is so you don't just have a guy muttering to himself in the corner. I wouldn't be surprised if the Scottie reference is intentional as well, as James Doohan filled a similar tech-dump role in Star Trek TOS.
Even if not, the accents are probably intentional, again just to differentiate important bits of the script from 'here comes the science exposition' -- I'm not even sure they want people to pay attention to it.

I will say this. If you told me 10 years ago that in 10 years I would be watching a TV show about SHIELD, I would tell you you're smoking crack. And not because I wouldn't believe that there is a SHIELD show, but because I wouldn't believe that I would care about it. This can also be said about any of the Avenger movies. The fact that they are doing a good enough job that they got me interested in people like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America (characters that I hated as a kid.) is amazing in of itself. Is it the absolute best show on TV? Not by a long shot, but hey, it's better then a lot of crap that is out there too.
