I grew up flipping through Marvel Universe entries. It was pretty clear that Wolverine's claws were artificially-added spring-loaded adamantium implants. After Magneto stripped Wolverine of his metal bits, Wolvie had bone claws. In Wolverine: Origin he had bone claws. What's the deal with Wolvie's claws? Did they retcon things or is there some way that the classic Marvel U diagrams are consistent with his bony claws?

As far as I know it was a straight retcon. I think the bone claws make more sense on a technical aspect. The adamantium bone bonding is one (outrageous) thing but why would the Weapon X crew do that and THEN implant the claws?

I mean, the springs had to be made of something that wasn't the most resilient metal in existence, right?

His claws are a part of his mutation not surgically inserted like it was previously believed.

His claws are a part of his mutation not surgically inserted like it was previously believed. So he always had claws, and then when they powder coated him the claws got covered as well? I guess that makes perfect sense!
